Creativity & Aesthetics

Aesthetics

Last year, I discovered an interest in Interaction Design and spent the year applying that knowledge with technology. In my B31 internship, I mainly worked on applying theory from Aesthetics of Interaction, as well as designing graphics in a way that easily conveys information.

In my project for researching the viability of pink road signs, I researched colour theory and its effects on the brain. It explained why certain colours were chosen for road signs in the first place, because of their attention grabbing properties like Fluorescent blue, yellow and red.

The most interesting part was explaining my findings through theory I learned in Interaction Design. Particularly, the frogger framework and feedforward.(Wensveen et al., 2004) It explained why symbols are more often used for conveying information, and the colours for redundancy and secondary indications. Because the just colours create confusion around the meaning if one isn’t able to deduce it at first glance. This framework would explain the news articles and social media posts that I found while researching.

Ideation

I didn’t do many ideation techniques during my B31, and this was already something that I’d developed a fair amount during last year. My methodology is grounded in iteration and playful thinking. Thinking what is fun or exciting to do, to be novel and push the envelope that is my style. I got to do this a bit with Innovation & Automation, since it was an entirely new topic with a lot of possibilities. For my FBP, I will go back to quick prototyping and getting to show physical stuff. My sketching isn’t the greatest, and can be improved upon. But I’d rather start searching for style that I work more efficiently with. Also relates back to the storytelling goal for me.
